Rachel
I am from Pinconning, Michigan, population 1,300, so I'm a straight up Midwestern girl. I attended Central Michigan University where I was studying to become a weather girl, but then switched to politics and interned at both the US Congress and at Michigan's state capital. In college I was known as the professional intern because I worked so much but didn't have a penny to show for it. Besides the internships, I was Captain of our nationally ranked cheerleading squad. When I wasn't working for free or cheering, I was at the bar, not drinking (because of our very strict drinking policy), but socializing, dancing on tables and flirting.
I ended up coming to New York because of my passion for baseball. I had been offered an internship (yep another) at the Major League Baseball Commissioner's Office in the IT Dept., so I moved to the city not knowing a soul. The first year in NYC was really difficult; I was working full-time at MLB, part-time cocktailing at the Hudson Hotel and finishing up classes online in order to graduate and NOT go back to Michigan. Things seemed to be perfect until I was home for graduation in 2003 and one of my professors refused to pass me because I turned my term paper in 12 hours late. I think I finally graduated in May 2003 (joking, I did; it's a joke in the family since I have not seen the actual diploma).
So how did I end up at Lizzie Grubman Public Relations? While working at the Hudson Hotel, I was approached for a date by a guy, and I told him that he would only have a chance if he could get me a job or internship at Lizzie Grubman PR. Well, obviously, I got the internship at LGPR...but for the guy, well, he's a bit weird.
In the office, I handle accounts for nightclubs, entertainment and sports. I love to plan events and come up with creative ideas. The bigger the bang the better. I'm very serious when it comes to work--I like to get my work done and then not think about it when I'm finished. Once I leave the office, I can't shut up and sit still. You will rarely find me watching TV or at a movie. My friends and family are the most important people in the world to me. I talk to my friends in Michigan at least once a week--I'm a cell phone-a-holic.
I have one sister, who is completely opposite of me. She's the artsy, hippie that writes poetry. She's a creative writing professor at the University of Mass. My parents live in Michigan and are very proud of us both. My mother is originally from Finland and my father is a chemical operator.
I love shopping, but I have to do it on a budget, I don't make that much money hence the second job at the Hudson.
I truly love working at LGPR; my life has changed completely. Lizzie is my mentor, she has taught me so much thus far and I know I will continue to learn tons. She's the most amazing person inside and out. Kelly Womack has turned this country girl into a semi hip-hop guru or at least taught me how to shake it like a Polaroid picture. Brenda is brilliant. Ali is our in-office fashion consultant. Before NYC I couldn't tell you a major designer, but now, I can't wait to have enough $$$ to buy myself a Marc Jacobs bag. Millie is great; she's very laid back and we relate. Kelly Brady is my California girl; we're more like sisters than friends and would do anything for each other.
